Magnolia White Tea

Magnolia White Tea

An exquisitely sweet white tea from the mountains of Yunnan, harvested in early spring and scented with fresh magnolia blossoms. The scenting process imparts a lush, floral, honeyed layer that evolves with each infusion.

This micro-lot of Yue Guang Bai (White Moonlight) is an early spring white tea from Yunnan, expertly produced according to the style of Fujian White Peony King (Mu Dan Wang). For this project, we worked with our long-term partners in the western area of Yunnan's Wa Autonomous Region.

We commissioned this white tea to be grown organically and scented with Yu Lan magnolia flowers native to eastern China, where the flower symbolizes purity and nobility and is renowned for its transportive, intense aromatics. The method of scenting is similar to jasmine tea processing, where fresh aromatic flowers infuse the tea to create a candied, multi-floral and heady fragrance.

The white tea itself is naturally sweet, but the additional scenting imparts a floral honey and nectar-like sweetness unlike other teas. Some flowers may be present and should be brewed alongside the tea leaves.

The strength of this mountain tea reveals itself through several rounds of infusion, while the magnolia aromas and floral sweetness continue to evolve throughout the brewing session.

Wa Shan Ecological Tea Garden sits in Lincang, on the border with Myanmar (Burma) in southwestern Yunnan. Surrounded by a lush and biodiverse mountainous region, this certified organic tea farm is one we have been working with since 2013. Wa Shan is a famous tea mountain since ancient times named after the Wa ethnic minority who have farmed tea in this region for more than a thousand years.
