Red Shudei Mogake Tokoname Teapot

Red Shudei Mogake Tokoname Teapot

Handcrafted at a family-run kiln in Tokoname, Japan, this collectible side-handle kyusu’s rich red shudei clay surface showcases distinctive patterns created with a traditional seaweed-wrapping technique. The built-in sasame filter allows for clean, controlled pouring.

Our team selected this yokode kyusu at Gyokko Kiln during our 2025 visit to Tokoname, Japan. Led by second-generation potter Hirotaka Umehara, Gyokko is a family-run kiln specializing in traditional teaware crafted for comfort and ease of use.

To create its one-of-a-kind design, seaweed was wrapped around the vessel before firing, leaving behind delicate, organic patterns across its rich red clay surface. The integrated sasame filter ensures a smooth, graceful pour, while the unglazed clay offers balanced heat retention and a subtly porous texture suited to refined tea preparation.

To maintain purity of flavor, we recommend reserving this kyusu for a single green, white or oolong tea.
Tokoname, Japan

Japan

Located in Aichi Prefecture, Tokoname has a rich ceramic tradition dating back to Japan’s Heian period (794–1185). Known as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, the city is famous for its handcrafted kyusu and ceramic shrine statues. Beckoning cat figures (maneki-neko) are a signature sight in Tokoname and are thought to bring good fortune to the residents and travelers who cross their path.
